Proven Techniques To Smooth Your Curls
Frizz - the nemesis of curly hair. Turning styled and defined curls into a wild, unruly and undefined mess.
Learning how to manage and eliminate frizz is essential for keeping your curls looking their best all year round. In our latest blog, we’ll explore what frizz is, what causes it, and most importantly, how you can combat it.
We've created a quick and effective 30-second refresh routine, perfect for anyone on the go, including busy mums, gym enthusiasts, and anyone who needs a fast refresh!
What Is Frizz?
Frizz occurs when the cuticle of your hair is raised- individual hair strands lift and separate, creating a fuzzy and uneven texture.
It’s really common and completely natural if you have even slightly textured hair.
Frizz can be particularly challenging for wavy and curly hair because curls are more prone to dryness and damage, which can exacerbate the frizz.
What Causes Frizz?
1. Lack of Moisture
The primary cause of frizz in hair is a lack of moisture. When hair is dry and lacking in hydration, the cuticle layer opens up, allowing moisture from the air to enter and swell the hair shaft, the result = frizz.
2. Humidity
Humidity is another major culprit for frizz. Curly hair naturally absorbs more moisture from the air due to its lack of moisture retention. A combination of dry hair + moisture in the air means your hair will find a way to absorb the hydration.
3. Damage and Breakage
Damage from heat styling, chemical treatments, and environmental factors can also cause frizz. Curly Hair that is damaged from heat has a rough cuticle layer, making it more susceptible to frizz.
4. Incorrect Hair Care
Using the wrong products or techniques can lead to frizz. For instance, rough towel drying, brushing incorrectly and using harsh shampoos can all contribute to the problem.
How Do You Get Rid Of Frizz In Curly Hair?
1. Hydrate and Moisturise
Keeping your curls hydrated is crucial. Use moisturising shampoos and conditioners, hydrating styling products and incorporate deep conditioning treatments into your routine.
2. Use a Microfiber Towel
Switch to a microfiber towel or a soft cotton t-shirt to dry your hair. These materials are gentler on your curls and by squeezing your hair rather than fluffing it, you will reduce friction, which can help prevent frizz.
3. Avoid Heat Styling
Minimise the use of heat styling as it can strip moisture from your hair. If you do use heat, apply a protective spray like Know Knot by O & M to protect your curls from damage.
4. Seal in Moisture
If your hair is really thirsty, (you might be a type 3b or Type 4 hair type) - after washing and conditioning, apply a nourishing oil to seal in moisture and smooth the hair cuticle. You can also use Hush Nourishing Oil pre-wash to give your curls an extra boost of hydration prior to styling.
The 30 Second Refresh For Curls
Sometimes, you need a quick fix to refresh your curls post “attack of the frizz”.
Whether you’ve been caught out in the rain, battling the summer humidity or freshening up post-workout, this 30-second routine is your go-to solution.
Step 1: Spritz with Water. Lightly mist your curls with water to rehydrate them. You can either wet your hands and glaze over your hair (using a prayer hand motion) or if you have one, use a spray bottle filled with water.
Step 2: Apply A Curl Cream. Take a small amount of Cruise Control Curl Cream and emulsify it in the palm of your hands with a few drops of water. Glaze the product over your hair using the palms of your hands, (more prayer hands) and then GENTLY scrunch your curls upwards. This will help hydrate, and redefine your curls, reducing frizz instantly.
Step 3: Smooth with Serum. Finish by applying a few drops of Hush Nourishing Oil to your hands and gently smoothing over the ends and top layer of your hair (Avoid the roots if you’re prone to oil). This last step will seal in moisture and give your curls a polished look.
Remember, the key to healthy, frizz free curls is - Hydrate Hydrate Hydrate.
By Hydrating your curls and following this simple 30-second refresh routine, you can keep your curls looking fresh and frizz-free, allowing you to get on with your day.
