Why this brush means so much to me
Before LOHY. was even an idea, I was a daughter watching my mum face the hardest fight of her life.
Twice. She was first diagnosed with breast cancer when I was about thirteen, and again when I was seventeen. One of the hardest parts for me was knowing she was going to lose her hair, that crown I've built my whole life around. She wore wigs and gorgeous headscarves, but it was really hard to see.
What stayed with me most wasn't the fear, though. It was her strength. She just kept going, the first time while married and the second time on her own, and our community really showed up for her. Hair has always been part of my story.
For so many people going through treatment, hair is tied to identity, to confidence, to feeling like yourself, and that's part of what drove me to hairdressing. I get to give that to people every day.
This brush is my way of saying thank you to her and to everyone who walked a leg of that journey with us: the friends who called and checked in, the nurses and hospital staff, all the people in our world, paid and unpaid. Now I get to pay it forward.
$3 from every brush sold goes to the National Breast Cancer Foundation, and you can also donate through the link. This is our family's story, and I know it's so many others' too.
This October, I'd love for us to build awareness together, celebrate the survivors, honour those who didn't make it, and shine a light on everyone battling, or who has been through it, and the communities that hold them up.
