Here’s the thing I’ve learned about my curls: I can do the exact same routine every day — same products, same steps, same diffuser, and still, my hair rarely looks exactly the same. Some days, it looks AH-mazing, and other days, my curls look like I've ran them through a spin cycle!

And honestly? That used to frustrate me. I wanted predictable results, the kind of curls that showed up perfectly every wash day.

But over time, I made peace with the inconsistencies.

I realised something: every changing result — that’s just the nature of curls.

Why curls don’t look the same every day

There are SO many little factors at play that can completely shift how your curls turn out (too many to mention if i'm honest!):

  • Weather: Humidity, rain, or dry winter air can all change the way curls form and hold.

  • Products: Even if I use the same ones, applying just a little too much (or too little) can make a difference.

  • Timing: Some days I’m rushing and diffuse fast (or not fully), other days I’ve got more patience to air dry or hover diffuse.

  • Health & hormones: Yep, even things going on inside my body affect how my hair behaves.

  • Rapid weight loss: I’m not a doctor, but there’s a lot of conversation right now about how it can impact hair health, especially with the popularity growing in weight loss medications like Ozempic and Mounjaro.

  • Energy levels: When I’m tired or distracted, I might scrunch differently or skip a step — and my curls notice!

  • Sleep: I know if I have a really restless sleep, my curls show it! Or if i'm feeling lazy and forget to use sleep protection I end up with bed dreads that are really difficult to refresh.

  • Hair Growth: When your hair grows it changes. I notice my curls are heavier and the amount of volume I normally have changes. My curls also tend to split on the ends when it's time for a chop.

The reframe that changed everything

Instead of stressing about consistency, I started to embrace the unpredictability. My curls have personality. They don’t want to be identical every day — and maybe that’s the beauty of them.

Some days I get big, fluffy volume. Other days, super-defined spirals. And then there are the 'wild card' days where my hair just does its own thing (and I roll with it).

What’s stayed the same: my routine

Even though the results vary, routine is my anchor. It keeps my curls healthy, hydrated, and reliable enough that I know I’ll get good curls — even if they don’t look the same every single time.

I've found, it's okay to change it up when things really aren't working — however I've learnt it’s not about controlling every wash day, or getting frustrated when things don't work - it’s about giving your curls what they need so they can show up in their own unique way.
