Absorption Vs. Adsorption - Are My Curls Hydrated Or Coated?

Absorption Vs. Adsorption - Are My Curls Hydrated Or Coated?

Understanding how your hair absorbs products can totally change up your hair care game.

Knowing the difference between Absorption and Adsorption - and how these processes play a role in product performance - can make all the difference in achieving hydrated, perfectly styled curls. Let’s geek out together!

What’s The Difference?

Absorption happens when molecules penetrate the hair cuticle and integrate into the hair’s inner layers, like the cortex. This is how deeply nourishing ingredients work to repair or strengthen hair from the inside out.

On the other hand, Adsorption occurs when molecules stick to the hair’s surface without penetrating it. This creates a protective layer that delivers immediate, surface-level benefits like smoothing, reducing frizz, or adding shine.

Adsorbtion Vs. Absorbtion

How Do Silicone Based Products Cause Adsorption?

Silicones, commonly used in Curly Hair Care Products, create an adsorption layer by binding to the surface of hair strands through weak intermolecular forces known as Van Der Waals interactions. This process does not involve the silicones penetrating the hair shaft (as would occur in absorption); instead, they form a thin, even coating on the exterior.

This layer interacts with the hair's proteins, particularly keratin, by smoothing out the cuticle and filling in microscopic gaps, enhancing shine and reducing friction.

However, while this can improve manageability and protect hair from environmental damage, excessive buildup can lead to a heavy or greasy feel, making clarifying washes essential for balanced hair health.

How It Applies To Your Curls

  1. Hydration and Elasticity
Water is one of the few molecules that can easily absorb into the hair because it’s small enough to pass through the cuticle. For wavy, curly, and coily hair, this is crucial because water absorption keeps your strands hydrated, elasticated, and less prone to breakage. However, without proper sealing (think adsorption), that moisture can evaporate quickly, leading to dryness.
  2. Nourishing Treatments
Hair masks and deep conditioners are designed with absorption in mind. Their small, active ingredients target the cortex to repair damage and restore strength. For Coily and Afro Textured hair, which tends to be drier and more porous, these treatments are essential to maintaining healthy hair.
  3. Styling Products
Non-Curly approved styling products often rely on adsorption to coat the surface of your hair. For example, polymers in gels form a lightweight barrier that defines curls and tames frizz without penetrating the hair shaft and silicones create a smooth finish and help to manage frizz. However, approved styling products for curly hair; like LOHY., allow moisture to absorb into your hair strands keeping your curls hydrated and free from frizz. Avoiding products with silicones will give you much better long term results.

Why product choide matters

Why It Matters for Product Choice

  • Absorptive Products: Use these for repair and hydration. Look for lightweight conditioners and hair masks that can penetrate the cuticle.
  • Adsorptive Products: If you are going to use these for styling opt for lightweight products and always use a clarifying shampoo to cleanse the hair after.

By understanding the differences in absorption and adsorption, you can select products and routines that cater specifically to your Wavy, Curly, or Coily hair needs.

Ensuring your strands are both healthy and beautifully styled is key to longer lasting curls.
